autonomous end-to-end tests made by TDD enthusiasts

Automated tests are what makes agile software development possible. But writing, maintaining and healing end-to-end tests are the most frustrating parts of being a developer.

Why are we doing this

We have always been fighters for data and code quality. Unit and integration tests are great at what they do but can never give you the confidence that your app behaves exactly as expected when used by the user. To ensure that your user flows don’t break, only end-to-end tests can give you full confidence. These, however, are difficult to write, maintain and almost always flaky. We just had to change this. We’re using our experience in large-scale application development and machine learning to create a testing tool we wish we had all those years. Together, we make automated end-to-end tests stable, affordable and fast.

Why call it octomind?

First and foremost, octopi are one of the most intelligent animals on the planet. Secondly, they are lightweight and swift. Last but not least, they can test multiple solutions simultaneously with their eight arms. These are the guiding principles for our UI testing platform.

The founders story

Octomind is the brainchild of Marc Mengler and Daniel Rödler. Marc has been developing web apps to bring his machine learning research into the hands of users since 2015. Many were smaller projects with little capacity for consistent testing and CI/CD. The teams often had to ship untested apps which frequently backfired.

Daniel was responsible for the web client of GoTo Meeting when he met Marc in 2019. GoTo Meeting had millions of users joining and running sessions every day. Automated testing was an essential part of the development workflow running fast iterations. Still, his team had to invest heavily into manual QA.

Marc hired Daniel for his new data labeling start-up as Director of Product. They were building labeling tooling used by thousands of labelers together at Understand.ai. Breaking functionality after releases would leave paid labelers idling. Again, testing was a critical part but no good solution existed to automate the process.

The advancements in generative AI led to a eureka moment in January 2023. Daniel’s vision of a solution to the testing problem leaned into Marc’s experience with scalable machine learning. They created Octomind to eliminate large parts of end-to-end testing.
